Taxes

Anyone who has lived in Japan for more than a year and has a fixed income is required to pay taxes like a Japanese resident. There are two main taxes in Japan: National Tax, which is payed to the national government, and Local Tax, which is payed to prefectures and municipalities.

National Income Tax

Income tax, shotoku-zei, is levied on income earned the previous calendar year. Salaried workers generally have this tax deducted directly from their salaries each month. Non-salaried workers must declare their income and pay income tax between February 16th and March 15th of the following year. However, if you earn additional income or claim deductions on medical expenses, you will need to file a tax return on your own.

Local Inhabitants Tax (Regional)

The Local Inhabitants Tax is the municipal and prefectural tax. This is also levied on income for the previous year. Most salaried workers have this tax deducted directly from their salaries. Others are required to pay on their own. If you are paying on your own, you must file your income tax report and submit it to the city hall by March 15th. You will receive a notice in the mail and need to pay it. Even if you are not working, if your income of the previous year surpasses a certain amount, you will receive a notice and be required to pay the tax.

Special Tax Collection: People who work for larger companies can choose to have the tax paid by direct withdrawal from their salaries. The company will then take care of paying the installments for their employees.

Ordinary Tax Collection: Independent business owners, farmers, and freelancers pay the tax in four installments over the course of the year through a tax notice issued by the city in June. The payment can be carried out at a bank, post office, etc.

Other Taxes:

Automobile Tax

Taxes imposed on persons who own an automobile. Written payment notice are sent out every year in April.

Consumption Tax

This tax is included in the price of goods and paid by the shop.
