Pension

The Japanese Pension System is a form of Social Security. All people, including foreigners, who are living and working in Japan are enrolled in the National Pension System. This system is mainly created to support elderly people, but there are other cases where money will be released early.

Basic Old-age Pension: For those who have been making contributions for 25 years or more, and are over the age of 65.

Disability Basic Pension: For those participating in the Pension System who have gotten sick or injured and possess a level 1 or 2 disability.

Survivor's Basic Pension: When an insured person dies while participating in the pension system, the deceased's spouse who takes care of their child(ren), or their dependent child(ren) , receive this pension. Note: “children" refers to individuals who are under 18 years old.

 

Categories for Applicants

There are three categories in the National Pension System.

 

Category 1

Self-employed persons, farmers, students, part-timers, etc who are between the ages 20-59 who are not insured in any of the other categories. For those not included in any other category.

Category 2

Persons who have Employees' Insurance or Mutual Aid Pension such as company and government employees. (Procedures are conducted through the place of employment)

Category 3

Spouses who are dependants of a Category 2 insured person. (Procedures are conducted through the spouse's place of employment)

 

Contributions

The contribution amount for Category 1 is 15,590円/month (can change by year). Monthly contributions for the Employees' Pension are based on annual total remuneration. They employer generally pays half of the contribution.

 

Waiver System

There is a Waiver System for those having difficulty paying contributions due to economic reasons. There is also a special Student Special Payment System.

 

Lump-sum Withdrawal

If you are a foreign national, who has been making payments to the Pension System for more than six months without receiving benefits, and no longer qualify to receive pension by leaving Japan, you can receive a lump-sum withdrawal payment based on your coverage period. You must apply within 2 years of leaving Japan in order to receive this payment.
