Inkan (personal seal) Registration

In Japan, an inkan (personal seal) is equivalent to your signature. Inkan are very important, so be sure you don't lose your inkan. If you do ever lose it, report it immediately to the police and your bank.

There are two types of inkan: unregistered and registered.

An unregistered inkan can be used for simple procedures such as signing documents, opening a bank account, withdrawing money, and issuing receipts.

A registered inkan is used for more important contracts such as buying a house or car, and borrowing and lending money. You can pick up an Inkan Registration Certificate, a document proving the registered inkan is genuine.

Making an Inkan

There are numerous specialty inkan makers in Hyuga. You can tell an inkan store by looking through the window or looking for the characters “印鑑". The workers there will help you through. Important choices are the text, material, font, case, and general shape of the cross section.
