Flood and Sediment Disaster

Miyazaki has an extremely high amount of rainfall each year and a large part of this happens during a two month period. The rainy season, tsuyu, occurs every year typically during June and July. This nearly constant period of rain can cause flooding and landslides.

 

Flood

Please avoid going outside into a flood if you can. Generally it is best to go to a high place and wait for help. If you need to evacuate, go to higher ground before flooding, or while the water is still low.

Prepare

・If there is a risk of flooding due to heavy rain or typhoons, it is advisable to move furniture and other important objects to a high place (whether that is an upper floor, or just on top of something else).

・Prepare an emergency kit

・If there is an announcement, it could be issuing a flood warning and asking people to evacuate. If you do not understand Japanese, please pay attention to those around you and follow everyone else's lead.

If you need to evacuate during a flood

・Do not go barefoot or wear rubber boots. Wear shoes that fit well on your foot and keeps foreign objects out like lace-up trainers or water shoes.

・When evacuating, tie everyone together with rope so no one becomes separated from the group. Be especially careful with children.

・Flood waters are not like swimming pools. The water moves and you do not know how deep it could be. Do not enter water that comes up to your waist. People can usually walk through 50cm (1.5ft) to 70cm (2ft) of slow flowing water.

・The water will be murky. You cannot be sure what is in the water, be it broken glass, a bike, or a sudden drop-off. Avoid walking through the water if you can, but when you do, use a long pole to check what is in front of you.

・Keep children and elderly safe. Carry elderly or disabled on your back. Use a flotation device for small children and a baby bath for infants.

 

Landslides

Landslides are typically a direct result of high rainfall and are a somewhat common occurrence in Miyazaki. Landslides happen suddenly and can travel at speeds of over 36 kmph (22 mph). You cannot outrun one if you wait until it has started. It is important to learn the warning signs and escape before the landslide starts.

 

・Fissures opening in the rock or ground

・Loose pebbles falling

・Water in wells and creeks becoming muddy

・Water spurting out from rocks or slopes

・Frightening cracking or rumbling sound coming from the mountain

・Water level in a river falling, despite continued rainfall
