Preparation for Disasters

Preparing for disasters

Natural Disasters can be terrifying and dangerous, but preparing for them in advance can make all the difference and give you peace of mind. The most important preparation is learning what to do in the event of a disaster. When you move into a new residence, familiarize yourself with the layout, think of a disaster plan (including where to take shelter during an earthquake or tsunami), and figure out where evacuation locations and emergency shelters are.

The second most important thing is an emergency bag. In a disaster, carry only the minimum necessities when you evacuate. A common suggested weight is no more than 15kg (33 lbs) for men and 10kg (22lbs) for women. Try to fit everything into one bag that is easy to carry on your back.
              Suggested items include:

      Ÿ   Portable Radio
To get accurate information. Best if it is small, lightweight, and can receive both AM and FM signals.

      Ÿ   Flashlight, candles
Essential for moving around in the dark. Ideally, the candles should be thick and stable.

      Ÿ   Spare batteries
For the radio, flashlight, etc.

Ÿ   Helmet or some padding for your head
After an earthquake, many things are unstable and continue to crumble. It is best to protect your head from falling objects.

      Ÿ   Nonperishable emergency rations
Nonperishable food items are essential and should be able to be eaten without being heated. (3-day supply)

      Ÿ   Water
Pure water, not sweet or flavored. (3-day supply)

      Ÿ   Clothes
Underwear, coat, socks, gloves, towel, etc.

      Ÿ   Medical supplies
First aid kit (bandages, gauze, disinfectant, antipyretics (for reducing fevers), digestive medicine, cold medicine, pain killers, eye drops, tweezers, etc). Don't forget to also bring any medications, hearing aids, etc.

      Ÿ   Household items
Lighter, can opener, tissues, plastic bags

      Ÿ   Copies of important documents
Passbooks for bank accounts, health insurance card, license, birth certificate, etc. A copy of your address book or contact information can also be useful for contacting people.

      Ÿ   Multi-tool or knife
Ideally one with a knife, scissors, and can opener

      Ÿ   Money
Bills and some 10円 coins for pay phones

      Ÿ   Cellphone with chargers
Be aware, the power might be out, so it helps to have other ways to charge phones.

      Ÿ   Other special items
Baby supplies (bottles, formula, diapers), activities for children, pet supplies, spare keys, etc

Other useful items to have at home, but not necessarily in your emergency bag:

Dry shampoo, body wash, whistle, water container, portable camping stove, crowbar, spare glasses, etc

Firefighting and rescue equipment (fire extinguishers, shovel, saw, jack, buckets, and filling your bathtub with water)
