  Crime

Japan is among the safest countries in the world, but crimes do still occur. You should always lock your doors and windows at night or when you are out to keep out prowlers. Bicycle thefts in Japan are relatively high considering the low crime rate, so lock your bike securely. You should also be careful of purse snatchers, be aware when walking along streets. Purse snatching, prank calls, and sexual harassment are not uncommon. Women should be extra careful when walking on deserted streets at night.

If anything happens, you should call 110 for the police or head to a Koban or Police Station.

If you ever feel unsafe or suspect you have a stalker, Koban, police stations, and convenience stores are designated safe zones and good places to get help.

  Koban

A Koban (or police box) is a small local police station. Koban are located throughout any Japanese city and are part of the reason Japan has such a low crime rate and high catch rate. Typically located near stations and major intersections, they are small buildings with red lights on the front. Police are on duty 24 hours a day to ensure the safety of the community. Their main duties include patrolling the neighborhood, giving directions, operating a small lost and found, filing crime reports, and responding to emergencies.
